How to Choose a Walking Frame or Rollator

Standard frame, wheeled frame, or rollator with a seat — how to pick the right level of support.

Standard frame vs. wheeled frame vs. rollator

A standard (static) walking frame offers the most stability but needs to be lifted with each step, which suits users with good arm strength. A two-wheeled frame glides more smoothly for a steadier gait. A four-wheeled rollator with a seat suits people who want to walk further and rest along the way.

Get the height right

With arms relaxed at the sides and wrists bent slightly, the hand grips should sit roughly level with the wrist crease. Most frames have adjustable legs — check this after assembly, not just in the product photo.

Where will it be used day to day

If the home has narrow doorways or tight turns, measure the width of the frame against your doorways. For outdoor use on pavements, wheeled options are usually easier to manage than a fully static frame.
